Honey the natural sweetener.
Honey could probably be the most remarkable healing agent for low energy, inflammation, wounds, and skin care, mostly known for cough and soreness.
Cough is one of the biggest concerns for most parents; trust me, if you are a parent with a child that has irritating coughs, runny nose and dry throat, you are not alone. A cough can impact the quality of life, increase anxiety, and affect sleep for children and adults. Winter is the season for cold and flu.
When growing up, I would only see Honey in the kitchen; during this season, I never really understood why but as I grew and never stopped learning, I understood that Honey is a natural healing agent.
Honey has become my household essential ever since I became a parent because I started questioning everything that I was told by doctors and sales ads.
I grew up knowing sugar was essential and Honey was a luxury, but why sugar? Because sugar was always advertised as good for our health due to a lack of enough research and knowledge. After years of research, it has been proven that sugar is terrible for our health, both children and adults.
Sugar has contributed to causing countless diseases, mostly incurable, but how can we reverse the years of harm we have caused to our bodies by consuming sugar? The million Rands question; firstly, we can stop consuming sugar; of course, it’s not easy because our taste buds, brain chemistry and hormones have been commandeered to believe that we need sugar. Because of that, we need to find a natural replacement for sugar, and Honey is that harmless replacement.
Cough & Honey
The truth is, the most irritating cough symptoms for children are respiratory infections with mild viral infections that can be treated at home without medication but with RAW unpasteurized and unfiltered Honey. Cough is often why most parents take their children to the emergency room or rely on over-the-counter medication. But did you know there is no research-based evidence for the effectiveness of cough medicines, especially in underage children. But because we have been programmed to believe that we must go to the hospital and get medicine for everything, we have lost the sense of patience and naturally heal ourselves.
Honey has positive benefits from anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory effects, which inhibit upper respiratory tract infections, and also has an antithrombotic effect which helps reduce the clotting created by mucus, its antioxidant properties from pollen help boost our immune system, making it a complete all-natural package for reducing sore throats and coughs.
Benefits of Honey
One would ask what are the benefits of raw unpasteurized and unfiltered honey? The list is endless;
Raw, unfiltered honey is often touted for its numerous health benefits and unique properties. Benefits of consuming raw, unfiltered and unpasteurized honey:
Raw honey contains essential nutrients, including vitamins C, & vitamin B complex, minerals (such as potassium, calcium, and iron), and antioxidants. While the exact nutritional composition varies depending on the floral source, raw honey can contribute to a balanced diet. Note the floral source is essential for the quality of honey the Bees produce.

Raw honey has been traditionally used to soothe sore throats and coughs. It can provide a soothing effect on the throat due to its texture and potential antimicrobial properties. Honey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for wound healing. Raw honey’s antimicrobial properties, low pH, and ability to maintain a moist environment around the wound are believed to contribute to its potential wound-healing effects.
Some studies suggest that certain components of raw honey may possess anti-inflammatory properties. These properties could potentially help reduce inflammation in the body and alleviate symptoms related to inflammatory conditions.Honey contains antioxidants, including flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which can help protect the body against oxidative stress. Antioxidants play a vital role in reducing cell damage caused by free radicals.
Raw honey is rich in natural enzymes and phytonutrients that can support overall health. Enzymes aid in digestion and the breakdown of food, while phytonutrients have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Even research suggests that Honey could be more beneficial for relieving cough symptoms long and short term. But the problem is, Honey bought in shops is not Honey any more; it’s pasteurized, and what’s left is sugar-based syrup without the beneficial properties.
Pasteurization
What do we mean by pasteurized honey?
Let me give you a clear perspective of what we mean, the chemical compound of Honey is mostly made up of fructose and glucose and has beneficial components, but through heat up to 37°C (98.6 F) it causes a loss of nearly 200 components, part of which are antibacterial, good bacteria, enzymes, and antioxidants that make Honey so powerful. So the pasteurizing process used for Honey is a heat of up to 71°C (160°F). It’s crazy how it’s almost twice as much as the heat when it loses its properties, at this point the Honey will increase the production of a toxic substance called 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). So in conclusion, even the Honey we buy at shops is no longer Honey.
Conclusion
It’s worth noting that while raw, unfiltered honey offers potential benefits, it should be consumed in moderation due to its high sugar content. Additionally, infants under the age of one should not consume honey due to the risk of botulism. If you have any specific health concerns or conditions, it’s always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet.
